Luiz de Godoy is a 37-year-old Brazilian-German conductor based in Hamburg, where he teaches orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. His international profile is unique amongst his peers in age and as a black classical musician.
Appointed Artistic Director of the Hamburg Boys’ Choir in 2021, he made his debut with the ensemble that same year together with members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, conducting Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at the Laeiszhalle for a radio broadcast. At the Hamburg State Opera, he conducted 55 performances over four seasons, including the premieres of Spring Awakening (Ludger Vollmer) and the chamber version of A Trip to the Moon (Andrew Norman). From 2019 to 2025 he also directed the house’s Children’s and Youth Choir, and collaborated frequently with Kent Nagano and the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, including an appearance at Carnegie Hall in 2023.
He has prepared choirs for leading orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, working with conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Ton Koopman, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle and Simone Young, among others.
Based in Austria from 2010 to 2019, he was choirmaster of the historic Wiener Singakademie (once led by Johannes Brahms), the Chorus Academy of the Vienna State Opera, and “Kapellmeister” of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. For his broad commitment to choir music in Austria he was granted the Erwin Ortner Prize in 2016. In 2019, he debuted at the Musikverein Golden Hall, leading the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien.
He has performed at major international venues including the Wiener Konzerthaus, Danish Musikhuset Aarhus, Peking National Opera, Sala São Paulo, Seoul Lotte Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Taiwan National Theater, Teatro Real Madrid, and Tokyo Opera City Hall.
Eclectic in profile, he has collaborated as a singer with the Rolling Stones and Bobby McFerrin and has conducted Youth Orchestras from Salvador da Bahia to Singapore; he performed for the Japanese Imperial Family and the British Royal Couple. In 2022, he also served as artistic curator of the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. A frequent guest at the “Vokalwoche” at the Melk Abbey (Austria), he has also been part of the jury in choir competitions in Austria, Germany and Greece.
Luiz de Godoy began his musical training at the age of five as a chorister in his Brazilian hometown. Soon after, he pursued intensive piano studies at the “Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo”, while already engaging in chamber music, lied accompaniment, collaborative piano and orchestral playing at an early age. At 12 he gained his first public experience as a choral conductor – starting his path in front of his family’s choir, which was possible by being born to a vast family of over 80 members. By the age of 16 he was already working occasionally as an opera répétiteur at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, while also winning first prize at a major Piano Solo competition in Brazil. At 18 he made his debut as a soloist with orchestra with Mozart’s K.V. 453.
During his piano degree at the University of São Paulo, he was awarded scholarships by Fulbright through a UNESCO exchange programme, which took him to Boston, New York, Washington D.C. and Tanglewood, and later by FUNARTE (Brazilian National Foundation of Arts), which enabled him to move to Vienna. He completed a Master’s degree in Piano as an Erasmus scholar between Cologne (Germany) and Castelo Branco (Portugal), followed by a Master’s in Orchestral and Choral Conducting at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, where he graduated with highest distinction (summa cum laude). In 2019, he received the Prize of Honour from his alma mater.
Alongside his artistic career, Luiz de Godoy is engaged in anti-racism, postcolonial critique applied to the sociology of music, and the democratization of opportunities in classical music. Since 2018, he has volunteered with Jeholú – Núcleo Voz Negra and is frequently invited by German institutions as a speaker on issues of identity and social inclusion.
Luiz de Godoy zählt zu den international profiliertesten brasilianischen Dirigenten seiner Generation. In Hamburg ansässig, lehrt er Orchesterleitung an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. 2021 wurde er zum Künstlerischen Leiter des Hamburger Knabenchores berufen und debütierte im selben Jahr in der Laeiszhalle mit dem Ensemble und Mitgliedern des NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchesters mit Bachs Weihnachtsoratorium (mit Rundfunkübertragung). An der Hamburgischen Staatsoper dirigierte er in vier Spielzeiten insgesamt 55 Vorstellungen, darunter die Uraufführungen von Frühlings Erwachen (Ludger Vollmer) sowie der Kammerfassung von Die Reise zum Mond (Andrew Norman). Zwischen 2019 und 2025 leitete er zudem den Kinder- und Jugendchor der Staatsoper und arbeitete regelmäßig mit Kent Nagano und dem Philharmonischen Staatsorchester Hamburg zusammen, u. a. 2023 in der Carnegie Hall.
Er hat Chöre für renommierte Orchester wie die Wiener Philharmoniker, das Cleveland Orchestra, das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks und das Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino vorbereitet und mit Dirigenten wie Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Harding, Ton Koopman, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, Franz Welser-Möst und Simone Young zusammengearbeitet.
Zwischen 2010 und 2019 in Wien ansässig, war er Chorleiter der Wiener Singakademie, der Chorakademie der Wiener Staatsoper sowie Kapellmeister der Wiener Sängerknaben. Für seinen breiten Einsatz in der Chorszene Österreichs erhielt er 2016 den Erwin-Ortner-Preis. 2019 stand er am Pult des ORF Radio-Symphonieorchesters Wien im Goldenen Saal des Musikvereins.
Er trat auf bedeutenden internationalen Bühnen auf, darunter die Peking National Opera, die Seoul Lotte Hall, das Shanghai Oriental Art Center, das Taiwan National Theater, das Teatro Real Madrid, die Tokyo Opera City Hall, sowie bei Festivals wie dem Carinthischer Sommer, den Dresdner Musikfestspielen, dem Grafenegg Festival und dem Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.
Des Weiteren zeigt sich seine künstlerische Vielseitigkeit in Kollaborationen wie mit den Rolling Stones und Bobby McFerrin als Sänger oder als Dirigent am Podium von Jugendorchestern von Salvador da Bahia bis Singapur. Er dirigierte u. a. für die japanische Kaiserfamilie sowie das britische Königspaar. 2022 war er Künstlerischer Kurator des Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. Als Gastdozent ist er regelmäßig bei der Vokalwoche im Stift Melk zu Gast und als Juror in Wettbewerben war er bereits in Österreich, Deutschland und Griechenland tätig.
Luiz de Godoy begann seine musikalische Laufbahn mit fünf Jahren als Chorknabe in seiner Heimatstadt in Brasilien. Bald darauf folgte eine umfassende Klavierausbildung an der Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo – in jener Zeit, im Schulalter, beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit Kammermusik, Liedbegleitung und Korrepetition. Erste öffentliche Erfahrungen als Chorleiter sammelte er mit 12 Jahren, mit 16 war er bereits als Opernkorrepetitor in Projekten des Theatro Municipal de São Paulo tätig und gewann im selben Alter den Ersten Preis bei einem renommierten nationalen Wettbewerb in Brasilien. Sein Debüt als Solist mit Orchester erfolgte mit 18 Jahren.
Während seines Klavierstudiums an der Universität São Paulo erhielt er ein Fulbright-Stipendium im Rahmen eines UNESCO-Austauschprogramms, das ihn nach Boston, New York, Washington D.C. und Tanglewood führte, sowie ein Stipendium der brasilianischen FUNARTE, das ihm den Umzug nach Wien ermöglichte. Er absolvierte ein Masterstudium im Fach Klavier als Erasmus-Stipendiat in Köln und Castelo Branco sowie das Diplomstudium in Orchester- und Chordirigieren an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, das er summa cum laude abschloss. 2019 erhielt er dort den Würdigungspreis.
Parallel zu seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn engagiert sich Luiz de Godoy intensiv im Kampf gegen Rassismus sowie in der Demokratisierung von Chancen in der klassischen Musik – Werte, die seine pädagogischen Projekte ebenso prägen wie seine internationalen Kooperationen.
Luiz de Godoy é um dos maestros brasileiros de maior projeção internacional de sua geração. Radicado na Alemanha, leciona regência orquestral na Hochschule für Musik und Theater de Hamburgo. Apontado para a direção artística do Hamburger Knabenchor em 2021, estreou com o grupo naquele ano, junto aos músicos da NDR Elbphilharmonie-Orchester, regendo o Oratório de Natal de Bach com transmissão pela Rádio Estatal NDR. Na Ópera Estatal, regeu 55 récitas em quatro temporadas, entre elas a estreia de Frühlings Erwachen (Ludger Vollmer) e da versão de câmara de Die Reise zum Mond (Andrew Norman), além de dirigir o Coro Infanto-Juvenil da casa entre 2019 e 2025 e colaborar frequentemente com o maestro Kent Nagano e a Filarmônica de Hamburgo, como no Carnegie Hall, em 2023.
Tem colaborado, na preparação de coros, com orquestras de renome como a Filarmônica de Viena, a Cleveland Orchestra, a Orquestra Sinfônica da Rádio da Baviera, a Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, e maestros como Gustavo Dudamel, Ton Koopman, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle e Simone Young. Em 2019, esteve à frente da ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester no Musikverein de Viena, integrando assim o seleto hall de brasileiros a reger uma orquestra estatal austríaca na legendária Sala Dourada – sendo o único negro – ao lado de Villa-Lobos e Eleazar de Carvalho.
Radicado na Áustria entre 2010 e 2019, foi ainda regente da histórica Wiener Singakademie, que, ao longo de sua história, foi dirigida pelo jovem Johannes Brahms, no século 19, e por Bruno Walter, no início do século 20. Esteve ainda à frente da Academia Coral da Ópera Estatal de Viena, e foi mestre-de-capela dos Meninos Cantores de Viena, tradicional instituição fundada em 1498. Por essa atuação, recebeu em 2016 o Prêmio Erwin Ortner.
Regeu ainda em diversos palcos de destaque internacional como a Konzerthaus de Viena, a Musikhuset Aarhus da Dinamarca, a Peking National Opera, a Sala São Paulo, o Seoul Lotte Hall, o Shanghai Oriental Art Center, o Taiwan National Theater, o Teatro Real Madrid, o Tokyo Opera City Hall, além de atuar em festivais como o Carinthischer Sommer, o Dresdner Musikfestspiele, o Grafenegg Festival, o Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, e preparar solistas para o Festival de Salzburg.
Participou de gravações dos Meninos Cantores de Viena para a Deutsche Grammophon e, como coach de Juan Diego Flórez, para a Sony Music; teve concertos transmitidos por emissoras estatais como as alemãs NDR e ZDF, a austríaca ORF, a Televisão Estatal Sérvia, a Televisão do Vaticano, a CCTV da China e a TV Cultura do Brasil.
Músico de experiência eclética, colaborou musicalmente com os Rolling Stones e Bobby McFerrin, e regeu em ocasiões de gala para a família imperial japonesa e o casal real britânico. Em 2022, atuou também como curador artístico do Theatro Municipal de São Paulo.
Como regente, jurado em concursos e professor convidado em cursos de regência e de canto coral, dedica-se constantemente a projetos de democratização do acesso à música de concerto, colaborando, por exemplo, com a Elbphilharmonie de Hamburgo ou o NEOJIBA, na Bahia. É convidado frequente da Semana Vocal do Mosteiro de Melk, na Áustria, e atuou como jurado de concursos na Áustria, Alemanha e Grécia.
Luiz de Godoy iniciou-se em música aos cinco anos pelo canto coral em sua cidade natal, Mogi das Cruzes, e prosseguiu seus estudos em piano solo na Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo. Durante o bacharelado em piano na Universidade de São Paulo, conquistou bolsas que possibilitaram sua primeira experiência internacional nos EUA (Fulbright/UNESCO) em 2009 e, posteriormente, sua instalação em Viena (FUNARTE). Concluiu o mestrado em piano como bolsista do programa europeu Erasmus em Colônia (Alemanha) e Castelo Branco (Portugal), bem como o mestrado em regência orquestral e coral na Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, formando-se com distinção (summa cum laude). Em 2019, recebeu de sua alma mater vienense o “Würdigungspreis” (Prêmio de Honra).
Além de sua atuação artística, Luiz de Godoy dedica-se à luta anti-racista, à pesquisa em crítica pós-colonial aplicada à sociologia da música, e à democratização de oportunidades na música de concerto. Desde 2018, atua voluntariamente junto ao Jeholú – Núcleo Voz Negra e é frequentemente convidado por instituições alemãs para abordar questões de identidade e inclusão social.
